Why Is My Automatic Pool Cleaner Moving Slow? Troubleshooting Tips
An automatic pool cleaner—whether it’s a pressure-side cleaner with a booster pump or a suction-side vacuum attached to your skimmer—is the unsung hero of your backyard pool pad in Lakeway or Spicewood. It works silently in the background to collect sand, dirt, and stray leaf debris so your pool floor stays immaculate. But when your cleaner starts spinning in circles, gets stuck in the deep end, or moves at a glacial pace, it can disrupt your entire filtration cycle.

1. Check the RPMs and Wheel Speed
For pressure-side cleaners, their movement is dictated by water pressure flowing from the pad. You can check if your cleaner is getting the proper flow by counting its wheel revolutions per minute (RPM). Hold the cleaner just beneath the water surface and count how many times the marked wheel spins in 60 seconds. Most pressure cleaners require between 28 and 32 RPM to function correctly. If the wheels are spinning too slowly, it indicates a flow restriction somewhere along the line, not necessarily a broken vacuum.
2. Inspect the Wall Connector Screen
One of the most frequently overlooked components is the tiny stainless-steel filter screen located inside the wall attachment fitting where the cleaner hose snaps into the pool wall. This screen is designed to catch fine debris that gets past your main filter. Over time, it can become blinded by tiny particles or calcium scale flakes. Unsnap the fitting, pull out the mesh screen, rinse it thoroughly with a garden hose, and reinstall it. You will often see an immediate boost in cleaner speed.
3. Verify Pad-Side Valve Alignments
If you have a suction-side cleaner that plugs into your skimmer or a dedicated suction line, its speed depends entirely on your pool pump’s suction power. If your cleaner is crawling along the floor, look at the 3-way valves at your equipment pad. If your suction valves are open too wide toward the main drain or the alternative skimmers, power is being diverted away from the vacuum line. Slowly adjust the valves to pull more suction from the specific cleaner line until the vacuum moves smoothly without starving your pump for water.
4. Check for Hose Leaks and Twisted Lines
Exposed to intense Central Texas UV rays, pool cleaner hoses can expand, crack, or develop pinhole leaks over time. If air is entering a suction hose, or water is spraying out of a pressure hose joint, the cleaner will lose operational power. Inspect the hose swivels to ensure they rotate freely; if they lock up, the hose will coil and twist, causing the cleaner to float or tip over on its side.
