What Is a Pool “Dead Zone”?
A dead zone is any area within your swimming pool structure where water becomes stagnant or stationary. Even if your pump is running perfectly, pool shapes, steps, and deep pockets can prevent chlorinated water from mixing evenly. In July, when ambient temperatures push water past 88 degrees, these stagnant zones transform into thermal hot spots. Without fresh chlorine circulating through them, algae spores can take root and double in size in a matter of hours.
Common dead zones we find in Central Texas pools include:
- The spaces directly beneath or behind your walk-in steps and swim-out benches.
- Deep water corners furthest away from your return jets.
- Shallow sun shelves and tanning ledges where the water is only a few inches deep and absorbs solar heat rapidly.
- Inside skimmer throats where leaves have piled up and blocked direct suction.
The Dynamic Vortex: How to Position Your Return Jets
Many homeowners leave their return jets pointed straight up toward the surface of the water because they like to see the ripples. From a hydraulic standpoint, this is a major mistake. Pointing jets up creates a surface short-circuit: water leaves the jet, moves across the top inch of the pool, and enters the skimmer without ever circulating the deep end or mixing the floor layer.
To eliminate dead zones, you want to create a continuous, circular vortex pattern throughout the entire pool shell. Loosen the eyeball rings on your return jets and point them downward at a 45-degree angle, all facing in the same directional flow (either clockwise or counter-clockwise around the pool). This forces the chlorinated water down toward the floor, sweeping up debris and pushing stagnant water out of the corners. If you have a shallow tanning ledge, make sure at least one dedicated jet is sweeping water off that shelf to prevent a localized algae outbreak.
Understanding Water Turnover Rates
To keep water safe and sanitary, your equipment pad must achieve a full “turnover rate” daily. A turnover rate is the amount of time it takes your pump to move the entire gallon capacity of your pool through the filter media at least once. In the extreme summer heat, we recommend achieving two full turnovers every 24 hours. If your pool holds 20,000 gallons, your pump pad needs to process 40,000 gallons of water daily. If your baskets are packed with debris or your filter is dirty, your flow rate drops, causing your turnover rate to suffer and your water to look dull.
Maintaining Above-Ground Equipment Health
Achieving perfect circulation depends entirely on your above-ground pump pad health. You don’t need a massive remodel or yard excavation to fix poor flow; often, it simply comes down to routine maintenance and optimization of your above-ground elements:
- Clear Baskets: Clogged skimmer and pump baskets restrict flow and cause suction-side drop-offs. Empty them frequently.
- Filter Pressures: A high pressure reading means your filter media is full of debris, physically bottlenecking your circulation vortex. Clean your filter elements to lower the pad pressure.
- Valve Tuning: Adjusting your pad-side 3-way valves allows you to balance suction between your main drain and skimmers, optimizing floor circulation.
