The Silent Summer Killer: Understanding Pool Chlorine Lock in Austin

By the time July rolls around in Lakeway, Bee Cave, or West Lake Hills, the Texas heat is relentless. Homeowners are doing everything they can to keep their pools clear, which usually means throwing more chlorine tablets into the skimmer or chlorinator. However, a major hidden danger comes with over-using standard trichlor pucks: Cyanuric Acid buildup, leading directly to a condition known as “Chlorine Lock.”

At Above & Beyond Pool Service, we visit dozens of pools every July where the water is cloudy or green, despite the chlorinator being completely full. Here is the scientific breakdown of why this happens and how to fix it without damaging your plaster.

The CYA vs. Chlorine Balance

Cyanuric Acid (CYA) is often called stabilizer or conditioner. Think of it as sunscreen for your chlorine molecules. Without CYA, the intense UV rays of the Central Texas sun will burn off your free chlorine in less than two hours, leaving your pool wide open to algae. When your pool has a healthy amount of CYA (between 30 and 50 parts per million), it protects the chlorine so it can stay in the water long enough to sanitize it.

The problem is that standard chlorine pucks and cheap big-box store shock powders are “stabilized,” meaning they are manufactured with a heavy dose of Cyanuric Acid mixed right in. While the chlorine burns off or evaporates, the Cyanuric Acid stays behind forever. It does not evaporate. Every single puck you add permanently raises the CYA level of your pool.

How Chlorine Lock Occurs

As the CYA level climbs past 100 parts per million, it stops acting like a shield and starts acting like a prison. The Cyanuric Acid chemically binds to the free chlorine molecules so tightly that the chlorine cannot break free to kill bacteria or algae. This is Chlorine Lock. Your test strips might show a beautiful, dark purple color for chlorine, but that chlorine is completely useless. The water will begin to turn dull, then cloudy, and eventually break out into an aggressive algae bloom.

The Mathematical Solution

To keep your pool sanitary, there must be a specific ratio between your CYA and your Free Chlorine. As a rule of professional pool chemistry, your Free Chlorine level must be at least 7.5% of your total Cyanuric Acid level just to keep algae at bay.

  • If your CYA is at a normal 40 ppm, you only need 3 ppm of Free Chlorine to keep the water clean.
  • If your CYA climbs to an excessive 150 ppm, you would need to maintain a constant Free Chlorine level of over 11 ppm just to prevent algae! Running a pool at 11 ppm is expensive, harsh on swimmers’ eyes, and can bleach swimming suits.

How We Reset Locked Pool Water

Because Cyanuric Acid cannot be neutralized or removed by adding other chemicals, there are only two professional ways to fix a locked pool:

  1. Partial Drains and Refills: We carefully pump out a portion of the water and refill it with fresh tap water to dilute the CYA concentration. In our region, this must be handled by professionals. If you drain too much water at once, the dry clay and shifting limestone terrain can cause structural shifting or cause a pool shell to pop out of the ground.
  2. Reverse Osmosis Filtration: For high-end custom properties, we can run the water through specialized filtration units to strip out the CYA without wasting thousands of gallons of water.
